Quick Guide
  • Outside battle, catch chance uses the Aniipod, level, backstab and status multipliers. In battle, HP replaces the backstab factor.
  • Alpha catch chance has a separate formula: 6% base chance multiplied by the Aniipod multiplier. Don't assume lowering HP improves an Alpha catch.

Choose the catch before the throw

Before you throw an Aniipod, check what kind of catch you’re making. Aniimo uses different calculations for an unaware wild creature, a creature in battle and an Alpha. Choose your approach before you throw: position for a backstab outside combat, weaken an ordinary target in battle, and check the pod multiplier for an Alpha.

Outside-battle catches use backstab, battle catches use HP, and the official Alpha formula uses base chance and pod only.

You catch Aniimo with Aniipods, while traps and timing are part of the official creature-catching setup. Environment, weather, phenomena and time of day also affect which creatures appear. If your target isn't present, throwing more pods at the surrounding creatures won't solve the missing spawn condition.

What each Aniipod changes

Official Aniipod multipliers

A stronger multiplier raises the chance; it doesn't turn every ordinary pod into a guaranteed catch. Save the decision for the target in front of you. If you just need a common catch for exploration, compare the displayed chance before spending a more valuable item.

The Tumbler has a separate wrinkle: the backstab bonus doesn't apply to it. Its Nurture multiplier also has a specific condition—Aniimo gathered by Nurture. Don't apply ×6 to an unrelated wild encounter just because you're using the same item.

Story encounters can override the normal result

The official page says certain story encounters can force a catch to succeed or fail in Break, Backstab or outside-battle states. A guaranteed-success entry in the item table isn't proof that every quest creature is catchable at any moment.

Positioning, level and HP

Branches and Regional Badges also contribute to ordinary catches. The official base-chance calculation multiplies the creature’s base chance by 1 plus your Pathfinder Catch Bonus. If a region’s badge or Branch reward offers that bonus, it is worth checking before a longer catching session. The published Alpha formula is separate; don't add the ordinary Pathfinder bonus to it.

Outside battle, the published backstab multiplier is ×1.5, except with Tumblers. That's a reason to get into position before starting a fight. Once you're in battle, the formula uses the target's HP instead, so don't assume a rear-facing combat throw gets both bonuses.

Selected level and HP checkpoints
ConditionOfficial multiplierHow to use it
Target up to 10 levels above PathfinderLevel ×1No level penalty from this factor.
Target 11 levels above PathfinderLevel ×0.8The level penalty starts here.
Target at least 15 levels above PathfinderLevel ×0.1A large level gap can make an ordinary catch inefficient.
Ordinary target at 100% HP in battleHP ×0.8A full-health battle catch carries a penalty.
Ordinary target at 50% HP in battleHP ×1.1Weakening helps, though the bonus is modest here.
Ordinary target at 10% HP in battleHP ×1.26Further weakening improves the HP factor.
Ordinary target at 5% HP in battleHP ×1.65Very low health carries a larger bonus.

Status effects don't simply stack into one huge catch bonus. The official rule takes the lowest multiplier if any debuff is present; otherwise it uses the highest active status multiplier. Check the displayed catch chance when the target's behavior changes; don't assume sleeping gives the same final percentage for every creature.

Why Alpha catches need their own plan

The official Alpha base catch chance is 6%. With a ×2 Aniipod multiplier, that formula gives 12%, before considering any forced story result. This is why an Alpha can feel much harder to catch than a normal creature even after a successful fight.

Use the Alpha formula when deciding what to spend. The published calculation doesn't include Pathfinder level, backstab, HP or ordinary status multipliers for Alpha Aniimo. Bringing a stronger capture item matters; expecting ordinary low-HP bonuses to rescue a weak pod doesn't follow that formula.

When the pod bounces off or the target is immune

Stop and check the encounter before burning through more items. In one Reddit thread, players describe pods bouncing off a buried creature and an immune message. Tunneling underneath was suggested, but other players reported that it failed. That exchange doesn't establish a universal digging trick.

The official story-override rule is the better starting point: check your objective, the target's current state and any nearby interaction. Some encounters have conditions beyond the normal formula. If a throw is being rejected outright, a larger chance multiplier may not address the problem.

Lucky Catch is a different question. Community reports disagree about movement, reset timing and catch counts, with jokes mixed in among the advice. None of that establishes a dependable input combo or a guaranteed threshold. Improve the ordinary catch conditions you can control; treat a lucky result as a bonus.

A cleaner catching routine

Check the target and its state

Confirm you're aiming at an ordinary wild Aniimo, a battle target or an Alpha. Look for an immune message or a story condition before spending more.

Choose the matching approach

For an ordinary wild catch, line up the backstab. In battle, weaken the target. For an Alpha, focus on the pod's published multiplier.

Read the item condition

A Tumbler's Nurture bonus is conditional, and its backstab bonus is invalid. Don't carry either assumption into the wrong situation.

Throw, then judge the result

A failed chance roll and a rejected or immune target are different problems. Change the cause of the failure rather than repeating the same throw.
